Applications of Check Valves

Industrial processes

Check valves are used in many fluid systems such as those in oil and gas industry, and in many other industrial processes.

Check valves are also often used when multiple gases are mixed into one gas stream. A check valve is installed on each of the individual gas streams to prevent mixing of the gases in the original source. For example, if a fuel and an oxidizer are to be mixed, then check valves will normally be used on both the fuel and oxidizer sources to ensure that the original gas cylinders remain pure and therefore nonflammable.

Types of Check Valves

Many types of valves, check valves and other valve variants exist.

  • Backwater valve
  • Ball check valve
  • Diaphragm check valve
  • Swing check valve
  • Tilting disc check valve
  • Stop-check valve
  • Lift-check valve
  • Duckbill valve
  • Non slam check valve
  • Nozzle check valve
  • Axial check valve
  • Piston check valve
  • Petroleum check valves
  • Silent check valve

Benefits of Check Valves

There are a number of benefits and advantages to using non slam check valves:

  • protect pumps and compressor equipment from damage caused by backflow / reverse flow
  • reduce down time and loss of production due to failure of unsuitable valves
  • low pressure drop increases energy savings
  • check valves are very effective in preventing water hammer
  • eliminate chatter and reduce the possibility of sudden valve failure
  • lower maintenance costs; fewer moving parts
  • smaller footprint than conventional check valves
  • flexibility to cope with variable flow conditions
  • interchangeability with most conventional swing check valves without expensive piping modification

What is a Check Valve

A check valve is a mechanical device. It’s type of valve, which normally allows fluid (liquid or gas) to flow through it in only one direction. To prevent the liquid or gas from flowing in the opposite direction (backflow) the check valve closes automatically to prevent this.

Check valves are used in a wide variety of industries;

  • oil
  • gas
  • desalination
  • water
  • other process industries

The cracking pressure of a check valve is an important concept. This refers to the minimum upstream pressure at which the check valve will operate. During the process of check valve design and check valve manufacture, the valve will given a specific cracking pressure.

A Check Valve can also be known as: clack valve, non-return valve or one-way valve.
